What is Influence?
The process of influencing, as adapted from the Contribute, Attribute, Release and Empower [CARE] framework for Open Stewards (Petrides, Levin, and Watson, 2018) establishes 4 cornerstones of influencing practice.
The OpenEdInfluencers perspective includes a uniquely South African ‘humanising’ (Zinn and Rodgers, 2012) element, introducing Ubuntu as both a philosophy and practice of generosity. The revised UCARE framework establishes a process of influencing embedded in the activity framework.
How do OEIs influence?
Open Education Influencers seek to influence decision-makers through advocacy and facilitation, and aim to affect decision-making and practice through direct actions in Open education.
Six keys to influence people without manipulating:
1. Recognise the decision process
2. Establish trust
3. Create urgency
4. Gain commitment
5. Initiate change
6. Overcome objections (Jolles, 2019, para.7-12)
